Adopt a Polar Bear
Care for the Wild is collaborating with world-renowned polar bear researchers who are studying the western Hudson Bay population, near Churchill, Manitoba. Prior to this, it had been a well-known equestrian centre since 1968. We often took in horses that needed a home and if they were young and fit enough they would be schooled for lessons, which in turn would help to pay for those that had to retire. Over the years, the welfare aspect of the centre steadily increased. By 1995, the welfare side of our centre had increased so much that, when a little strawberry roan pony called Flicka became ill with an inoperable tumour, the foundation was born.nnFlicka had been rescued some years earlier after being found in a field in the middle of an industrial estate a small pony amongst high-rise buildings and billowing smoke. Flicka was delightful; he loved people, he was very affectionate despite his beginning and he adored lots of fuss. After several years of teaching young children to ride, he sadly developed liver cancer and was retired to convalesce with a condition we knew would ultimately take his life.nnFlickas illness highlighted the problems for horses and ponies in any walk of life that become too unwell or old to work or be riding ponies. Flicka was the beginning of our sanctuary, and he has lived on through the work we do. nnFlicka currently have thirty two horses and ponies; we also have some sheep, pigs, rabbits, chinchillas and various other small animals as well as cats and dogs. The Flicka Foundation has been a non-profit making organisation for ten years and has recently gained charitable status. nnThe Flicka Foundation is a very small sanctuary for funds raised, but quite large in terms of animals to care for. All our adopters are part of a very small team and every penny raised helps so much.

Thankfully they were rescued and taken to a sanctuary in the Issyk-Kul Biosphere Reserve, in their native home Kyrgyzstan. nnBy supporting this adoption programme, you can help to provide the long-term care they now rely on. He is an Indo-Chinese tiger and he weighed just 3kg when he was confiscated from smugglers in Cambodia. nnWhen first rescued Jasper already had signs of calcium and vitamin D deficiency, which results in poor bone development and the bowing of the legs. But with medical attention and dedicated care he is now very fit and healthy. At 8 months old he was found trapped by a snare. The steel cable around his neck had almost cut one ear in half. Luckily rangers removed the snare and Burra was taken to the stockades in Tsavo East National Park to receive veterinary care. His keepers were worried that he would be unable to swallow milk as his throat had been so badly constricted. However, after several hours' persuasion, Burra managed to feed. Burra has now recovered and lives with the older orphans in Tsavo National Park. The seasoned timber is then machined, planed smooth with rounded edges and finished to within 1mm tolerances. All fixing holes and nut recesses are drilled, then the timber is pressure-treated using a non-toxic chrominm / cadmium / arsenic - free solution approved for children's playground equipment.nnA large strong tower unit with four platforms spiralling around the central upright. Leading off the second platform is a wooden climbing ramp with rope, with the fourth platform leading to the green 3m wavy slide. For further enjoyment is a rope commando net and swing arm with two swings included. As with all our PlayCentres, we use pressure-treated planed rectangular timber to minimise splits and cracks.
